Team Hope – The Cancer Fighters are cycling across the USA

Erik Bergmann and Peter Møller are fulfilling a life-long dream while raising money and awareness to support the fight against cancer: On 13 September, they get on their bikes in San Francisco with the GPS set for Central Park in New York.

Erik Bergmann is 58, and Peter Moller is 65 years old and a cancer survivor. Actually, they have both battled health issues followed by trying periods of convalescence; but now they are fit and ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime – with DSV as logistics sponsor.

"We have traditionally supported the cancer cause, so when Erik and Peter approached us last year, we quickly said yes to help them with logistics. It’s a small thing for us, but a big thing for Erik and Peter. We’re very happy to take a load off their minds". Niels Larsen, President, DSV Air & Sea USA comments.

A little logistics and a lot of cheering

DSV Air & Sea in the USA and Denmark have been working together to make sure that Erik and Peter’s supplies for each stage arrive safely and on time – a pallet has been shipped from DK to our Clark, New Jersey, office in US, and smaller supplies packages will be distributed to each of the 32 stages from there.

On 17 October, on the final day of cycling, DSV USA’s cycling team will be joining Erik and Peter for the last leg of the final stage into New York, and we will also be cheering them on as they arrive at their goal: The Little Mermaid Statue in Central Park, where food, drinks and flags galore will be waiting. We can’t wait.

Intense planning and training

Initially, planning took up most of Erik and Peter’s time. They had to plan the route and find a way to pay for the trip while raising money for cancer at the same time. Not an easy task.

A lot of sponsors are supporting Erik and Peter’s adventure. They needed bikes, gear, trainers, a nutritionist, room and board and a logistics partner etc. Enough to make the project almost too overwhelming. But they persevered, and they found a solution to every challenge.

About six months ago, with all the details finally in place, they started a very intense training programme, which they have stuck to. They are now in great shape and ready to pedal – all 5.412 km to be completed in the course of four and a half weeks. It’s going to be a tough ride!

Send off by Cyclassics

As a final test before the big “race”, on 21 August, they rode along with the DSV Cycling team in Euroeyes Cyclassics, Hamburg, Germany. 100 km in one day.

"We had a fantastic time. When we looked up from our bikes, we could see and feel the support from the DSV team. We really felt a part of things. Thank you for a great experience," Erik and Peter wrote us after their weekend in Hamburg.

Erik and Peter are leaving for San Francisco 11 September. We wish them the best of luck.
