DSV delivers 285-ton complex heavy-lift breakbulk transport across Iraq

Three 25-meter e-houses transported safely from Basra to north Rumaila through challenging terrain, demonstrating DSV's expertise in oversized cargo execution and Oil & Gas logistics.

Breakbulk transportation from Basra to Rumaila in Iraq

DSV has successfully executed a high-complexity breakbulk transport project supporting the oil and gas sector in Iraq, demonstrating its capability to deliver critical infrastructure components across challenging and infrastructure-constrained environments.

The project involved the transport of three oversized e-houses, each measuring approximately 25 metres in length and nearly 6 metres in height. The units were moved from Basra in southern Iraq to north Rumaila, covering a distance of more than 150 kilometres.

Transporting cargo of this scale presented significant challenges, particularly along a route characterised by inconsistent road conditions, bridge limitations, and overhead powerline restrictions. The height and length of the transformers required meticulous route planning and continuous monitoring to safely navigate constrained infrastructure.

DSV managed the full scope of customs clearance and inland transportation, ensuring seamless coordination and compliance with local regulatory requirements. The operation required detailed route assessments, specialised transport equipment, and proactive risk mitigation to maintain safety and cargo integrity throughout the journey.

The movement along Iraq’s primary highway network introduced additional complexity, including variable driving conditions and limited adherence to traffic controls in certain areas. DSV deployed a dedicated escort team, working closely with local authorities, to manage surrounding traffic, mitigate risks, and ensure safe passage over the two-day journey.

Despite the operational challenges, the cargo was delivered successfully and without incident to the final destination.

This project highlights our ability to execute complex heavy-lift and breakbulk movements over long distances in demanding environments. Through detailed planning, strong local coordination, and the expertise of our in-country teams, we ensured safe and reliable delivery while effectively managing both operational and regulatory complexities.

The project was executed entirely by DSV’s local team and transport network, reinforcing the company’s strong on-the-ground presence and deep understanding of Iraq’s logistics landscape. This local expertise enabled agile execution, enhanced control, and efficient delivery across every stage of the operation.

As investment in energy and infrastructure projects continues across the Middle East, the ability to transport oversized and high-value components such as transformers safely and efficiently remains critical. DSV’s expertise in breakbulk and heavy-lift logistics positions the company as a trusted partner for organisations seeking resilience, scalability, and operational excellence in complex markets.
