What is the SENT system, and who needs a SENT number for export and import shipments to Poland?
The SENT system, managed by Poland's National Revenue Administration since April 18, 2017, monitors the road and rail transport of sensitive goods. It requires carriers to equip transport vehicles with geolocation devices, ensuring real-time tracking. A SENT number is valid for 10 days and is mandatory for:
- Road and rail transport,
- Import and export shipments to and from Poland,
- Sensitive goods transiting through Poland.
Sensitive goods include items like meat, food, fruits, wheat, soil, and certain ADR goods, with weight requirements varying by product. A complete list of sensitive goods is available at puesc.gov.pl.
Penalties for non-compliance are serious:
- Carriers may face fines up to 46% of the net value of goods.
- Drivers can be fined between PLN 5,000 and PLN 7,500 (€1,100–€1,700).
Proper registration in the SENT system is crucial to avoid these penalties.
Our team can help navigate these requirements and resolve customs inquiries.
How is DSV adapting to sustainability regulations in Poland?
Poland is gradually implementing Low Emission Zones (LEZs) in major cities like Warsaw, aiming to restrict access for older, polluting heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). The Polish government has established incentives for electric vehicle adoption and is investing in charging networks. The country is also focusing on aligning its national standards with the EU’s ambitious CO2 reduction targets by 2030.
In response to these developments, DSV is adapting by transitioning to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) to reduce carbon emissions and ensuring that over 83% of our fleet operates under the highest EURO emission standards. We are also increasing the use of our Driver app to significantly cut down on paper waste during transportation while supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, our partnership with Volvo enhances the decarbonization of road freight.
