Mandatory Sustainability Surcharge
As of 01/01/2025 effective
Sustainability initiatives in the Air freight industry are not new. Initiatives thus far where voluntary and could be actioned by the freight forwarder or the shipper such as the voluntary purchase of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
As per 2025, and into years to follow more mandatory regulations imposed by governments or agencies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will drive sustainability initiatives contributing to CO2 reductions in relation to global aviation.
Cargo will have to carry its weight and with the new legislation ‘’ReFuel EU SAF-mandate’’ effective January 1, 2025, European regulations will require suppliers of aviation fuel to include a proportion of SAF in deliveries to European airports starting at 2% for all departures from the EU.
As a result, DSV will implement effective January 1, 2025, a Mandatory Sustainability Surcharge on all air freight shipments departing from EU/UK airports regardless of their origin to intercontinental destinations.
Other countries, regions, global institutions in years to come will follow with similar initiatives on a non-voluntary basis, DSV has chosen to keep the surcharge naming broad and referenced to Mandatory Sustainability Surcharge in its ease for future application.
The surcharge will initially be set at EUR 0.04 per kilogram based on the chargeable weight of the shipment.
We understand that these changes may affect your costs, and we are committed to ensuring that these charges are communicated clearly and fairly. It is important for us to maintain transparency in this process and ensure that all surcharges comply with applicable legislation and reflect the actual costs of maintaining sustainability standards and operations.
