DSV completes 600km inland transport of transformers across Iraq
A complex cross-country logistics operation highlights DSV's expertise in oversized cargo transport for critical energy infrastructure in challenging environments
DSV has successfully completed the transport and installation of three transformers with a combined weight of approximately 70 tonnes for a customer in the Energy sector in Iraq, reinforcing its expertise in project logistics for large-scale energy infrastructure across high-complexity inland routes.
The transformers were moved as breakbulk cargo from DSV's yard in Basra in southern Iraq to the Al-Khalidia sub-station site in Ramadi - Al-Habbaniyah, located in the western region of the country. The operation covered approximately 600 kilometres and was completed within two days, in line with the agreed project schedule.
The movement of three transformers through Iraq's inland corridor required detailed engineering, specialist heavy transport equipment, and close coordination with local authorities across multiple jurisdictions.
Transport was executed using multi-axle hydraulic trailers, enabling safe load distribution and controlled movement of the cargo across variable and at times deteriorated road conditions.
Key operational challenges included:
- Transporting multiple transformer units within a tight delivery timeframe
- Navigating infrastructure constraints due to route geometry and road conditions
- Coordinating approvals and movements across several governorates
- Managing complex urban transit requirements, including passage through Baghdad
Despite these challenges, all three transformers were delivered safely and on time.
DSV managed the full logistics scope, including planning, loading, inland transport, delivery, and installation.
Installation was executed by using jacking and pulling method. This ensured full control over safety, sequencing, and installation quality during final positioning at site.

- Route engineering and feasibility planning
- Loading and securement of three transformers
- Multi-axle hydraulic trailer operations
- Regulatory approvals and multi-region coordination
- On-site installation and project control
