Florida braces for impact as Hurricane Milton nears landfall

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida, as a Category 3 storm on the evening of October 9, 2024. By early Thursday, it had weakened to a Category 1 storm as it moved through the state. The region has experienced severe flooding, high winds, and widespread power outages, leaving several highways impassable. As of this morning, more than 3.3 million energy customers in Florida were without electricity, according to poweroutage.us. The storm also forced the temporary closure of major seaports and airports along the Gulf Coast.

- Port Everglades: As of October 10, The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port has lifted Port Condition YANKEE.
- Port of Miami: As of October 10, The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port has lifted port condition YANKEE.
- Port Panama City: No update as of October 10.
- Port Tampa Bay: No update as of October 10. Last update on October 8, the port set conditions to ZULU meaning the port will be closed to incoming and outbound vessels.
- Port Jacksonville: Is closed as of October 10, and plans to reopen the Main Gates Friday morning, October 11.
- Miami International Airport: Open, flight delays and cancelations are expected.
- Fort Lauderdale Airport: Open.
- Melbourne Orlando International Airport: No update as of October 10.

Hurricane Milton has intensified to a Category 4 storm and is forecast to make landfall near Tampa, Florida, on the evening of Wednesday, October 9, 2024. According to The Weather Channel, Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida. The storm is expected to bring powerful winds, heavy rainfall leading to widespread flooding, and potential power outages in the region.
Port conditions
- Port Everglades: Closed until Friday, October 11.
- Port of Miami: Currently open and may be closed by Tuesday midnight, October 8.
- Port Panama City: No update as of October 8.
- Port Tampa Bay: Set to port condition ZULU on October 8, meaning the port will be closed to incoming and outbound vessels.
- Port Jacksonville: Set to port condition YANKEE on October 8, meaning the port will be closed to incoming vessels.
- Miami International Airport: Open, flight delays and cancelations are expected.
- Fort Lauderdale Airport: Open, flight delays and cancelations are expected.
- Melbourne Orlando International Airport: Set to close commercial operations on Wednesday, October 9 at 8AM.
