Requirements for the shipment of dangerous goods

Dangerous goods are an essential part of modern living, but by their very nature, they present a hazard to life and the environment if they are not handled, stored, and transported correctly.

Virtually every shipment of dangerous goods begins and ends with a road section, and these can be transported in either a tank or as a package using specialised drivers who hold vocational licenses to drive vehicles carrying dangerous goods by road.

In compliance with regulations

Legislation directs the requirement for companies to appoint an expert to assist them, to ensure that all legal requirements are correctly applied, and places certain responsibilities on three main participants in any dangerous goods shipments, these being:

  • The consignor – The enterprise that sends the dangerous goods
  • The carrier – Those that transport the dangerous goods
  • The consignee - The enterprise that receives the dangerous goods
