Delivering hope - DSV and Operation Smile bring life-changing surgeries to Mthatha
Vital cleft surgery supplies transported to Eastern Cape as part of a powerful partnership improving access to care

DSV in South Africa recently played a key role in a high-impact initiative in Mthatha, partnering with Operation Smile to provide life-changing cleft lip and palate surgeries to patients in need. The mission, which focused on safe surgical care for children and young adults, demonstrates the strength of collaboration in addressing critical healthcare gaps across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Over the course of three days, 36 patients were screened, 22 underwent surgery, and 6 received speech evaluations, thanks to the dedication of the Operation Smile medical team and the logistics support provided by DSV. To ensure the success of the programme, DSV delivered over 4 tonnes of essential medical resources, enabling medical professionals to carry out safe, timely procedures.
Operation Smile is renowned for providing free cleft surgeries, speech therapy, and long-term support to children born with facial differences. These missions require not only expert medical teams but a responsive reliable supply chain partner - a role DSV proudly fulfils through its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme.
