A helping hand when every minute counts
Delivering 85,000 protective masks to support firefighters on the frontlines of the Eastern Cape wildfires
As wildfires tore through parts of the Eastern Cape recently, speed became a matter of safety and survival for those fighting the fire - and the people they were protecting.
When DSV was asked to help, the emergency logistics response was swift. Nearly 85,000 PPE masks were delivered from Gauteng to the province's firefighting frontline in under three days, helping safeguard crews battling intense conditions and heavy smoke during one of the region's most demanding fire seasons.
The fire season was driven by dry summer conditions, strong winds, and above-average temperatures. Large areas of grazing land, plantations, and some residential zones were affected, particularly around Nelson Mandela Bay, Sarah Baartman, and Amathole districts.
According to provincial authorities and Working on Fire reports, tens of thousands of hectares were burned during peak months, with dozens of major incidents recorded - and firefighters have worked tirelessly on the front lines to protect lives, communities, and the environment.
Over the past few weeks, the urgent need for personal protective equipment became critical. Late on a recent Friday afternoon, DSV received a call for help from the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (NMBBC) to transport face masks from Gauteng to Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).
DSV stepped in immediately, and 84,750 face masks were soon on their way to the NMBBC offices and Humewood Fire Station, showcasing the company's rapid supply chain solutions and commitment to emergency freight delivery.
DSV thanks the firefighters, the NMBBC, and our dedicated team for keeping critical supply chains flowing to help those who bravely protect all who live in Gqeberha.
