DSV in South Africa teamed up with other partners and Operation Smile to provide life-changing cleft lip and palate surgeries to patients at Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg recently.
The humanitarian healthcare logistics mission, which focused on delivering safe surgery for children and young adults, demonstrates the strength of collaboration in addressing critical healthcare gaps across South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
On 29 May, 50 Operation Smile volunteer health professionals from across the country came together for a weekend of life-changing surgery. During the health screenings, 54 young patients were assessed, with 40 cleared for surgery. Those who were not able to undergo surgery were placed on a treatment plan for future care.
DSV delivered and coordinated the transport of essential surgical equipment, medical consumables, and support items, ensuring that critical supplies reached Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital safely and on time. By leveraging its expertise in healthcare logistics and supply chain management, DSV enabled medical teams to focus on what mattered most – providing life-changing care to patients and their families.
Operation Smile provides free cleft surgeries, speech therapy, and long-term support to children born with facial differences.
