Summary

The Compliance Specialist, HazMat supports the safe and compliant transportation of hazardous materials across DSV Road Transport operations. This role is responsible for assisting in the execution of the company’s hazardous materials compliance program by ensuring adherence to applicable federal regulations, including those established by the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).

 

The Compliance Specialist, HazMat works closely with the Manager, HazMat Compliance, as well as Safety, Operations, and Driver teams to review shipments, maintain compliance documentation, and support training and audit activities. This role plays a key part in preventing regulatory violations and ensuring hazardous materials—including lithium batteries and other regulated freight—are transported safely and in accordance with all applicable requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review hazardous materials shipments to ensure proper classification, documentation, labeling, and placarding in accordance with DOT regulations.
  • Verify shipping papers and related documentation meet regulatory requirements and company standards.
  • Monitor driver qualifications, including HazMat endorsement status, to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support compliance with Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171–180) and assist in maintaining alignment with FMCSA and PHMSA requirements.
  • Track and maintain hazardous materials registrations, permits, and compliance-related documentation.
  • Monitor regulatory updates and communicate relevant changes to the Manager, HazMat Compliance and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain and track hazardous materials training records for drivers and employees, ensuring compliance with required training and renewal timelines.
  • Support the administration of hazardous materials training programs and assist with driver safety meetings related to hazardous materials transport.
  • Assist in the investigation of hazardous materials incidents, including spills, releases, or regulatory violations, and support required reporting activities.
  • Maintain accurate and organized compliance records and prepare documentation for internal reviews, audits, and external regulatory inspections.
  • Track corrective actions resulting from audits or inspections and support follow-up activities to ensure resolution.
  • Collaborate with Safety, Operations, and Driver teams to promote compliance awareness and support safe transportation practices.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned to support hazardous materials compliance and operational needs.

 

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in transportation safety, hazardous materials compliance, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience working within transportation, trucking, or logistics operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR), DOT, and FMCSA requirements preferred.

 

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to review and interpret regulatory documentation.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous materials transportation regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage records, documentation, and multiple priorities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment and support compliance-related initiatives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn internal systems and tools.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods while performing desk-based compliance, documentation, and administrative work, as well as the ability to stand, walk, and move throughout warehouse facilities, truck yards, and operational areas during audits, inspections, and incident investigations. The role may require occasional lifting of materials, binders, or equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, as well as bending, stooping, or kneeling when reviewing freight, placarding, or vehicle documentation in the field. The incumbent must have sufficient visual acuity and manual dexterity to review shipping documents, labels, and markings on hazardous materials packaging. Travel to field locations, customer sites, and company terminals may be required on a regular basis.

 

Work Environment

This position operates across a variety of work environments, including a standard office setting, active truck yards, and warehouse or freight handling facilities. While performing duties in operational areas, the incumbent may be exposed to varying weather conditions, loud noise, diesel fumes, vehicle traffic, and the presence of hazardous materials in transport. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when entering certain operational areas, and the incumbent is expected to adhere to all applicable safety protocols and site-specific procedures at all times. This role may require occasional evening, weekend, or on-call availability to respond to hazardous materials incidents or time-sensitive compliance matters.

For this position, the expected base pay range is $24 - S28 an hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including relevant experience, skills, education or certifications, and geographic location, consistent with applicable laws and company policy.
