Spendrups

Spendrups first came to DSV to handle just-in-time delivery of beer from its brewery in central Sweden to its customers. At that time, another transport company shipped new, empty beer cans from the supplier in southern Sweden.

Recognising an opportunity to save costs, Spendrups asked DSV to also handle the transport of empty beer cans from the supplier. DSV now collects and delivers new cans from the Ball manufacturing plant in Malmö and delivers them to the Spendrups brewery, 600km away. The same trucks then bring cans back to customers in the Malmö region – but this time the cans have beer or soft drinks in them.

It’s a great approach for the environment, as it reduces the number of truck movements and CO2 emissions – something which is very important for Spendrups.

Claes Åkesson, Director Environmental & Sustainability at Spendrups

DSV was also able to offer the capacity required by Spendrups, including covering seasonal peaks when more trucks are needed than usual.

Dedicated DSV staff and hauliers work closely with both Spendrups and Ball, so the drivers know the customers' needs well, have been trained and have written instructions about what to do if anything goes wrong such as unforeseen traffic delays.

Time-critical transport with high demands on cleanliness

As beer is a fresh product, on-time delivery is essential. Spendrups also sets high standards for how the empty cans are handled in order to be sure that they are kept uncontaminated. All the trucks are sealed when leaving Ball, and a broken seal on arrival at the brewery means automatic rejection of the truck as the shipment may have been tampered with and the cans contaminated.

About Spendrups

Spendrups is a family firm founded over a century ago. As well as brewing several brands of beer, it also produces a number of soft drinks. All its beers are produced according to the German Beer Purity Law of 1516: the only ingredients allowed are barley, hops, water and yeast.
